During World War I (1917-1918), the Food Administration encouraged Americans to grow more of their own food, and these gardens became known as victory gardens. During the war, the United States government wanted to ensure ample food supplies for men serving in the armed forces and for America's allies. By growing victory gardens, citizens could provide for themselves, and this allowed more farmed produce to be sent overseas.
