Summary
Readers of "To Be Free" are invited to learn about the history and many expressions of racism, to explore ways of combating it, and to dare imagining a society free of it.
Many people of color deal with the reality of racism in all its forms on a daily basis—in stores, in schools, at work, on the bus, while watching television, listening to music, browsing the Internet, or reading magazines and newspapers. They can't pretend it away because it is always there before them. What if, however, we decided to acknowledge racism and talk about ways of preventing, reducing, and alleviating it? And what if we began the discussion among young people, before belief systems take shape?
Authors
Thomas Peacock has authored or co-authored many books, two of which were Minnesota Book Award winners. The Seventh Generation was a multicultural children’s book of the year (American Association of Multicultural Education). The Forever Sky received a Kirkus starred review (April 2019). He received both his master’s and doctoral degrees in educational leadership from Harvard University. He is a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Anishinaabe Ojibwe and lives with his wife, Betsy, in Red Cliff, Wisconsin.
Marlene Wisuri is a visual artist and co-author of books on immigration, Ojibwe history and culture, and local history.
Govinda Budrow is an educator with multiple licenses. She is a direct descendent of the White Earth Nation and is faculty at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Ivy Vainio is African American and a direct descendant of a Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe tribal member. Her photography has been featured in gallery exhibitions and international news publications.
