      The story in this book is based on a poem by Swedish writer, Viktor Rydberg, published in1881. Astrid Lindgren was an editor at a book publishing company at the time and promoted the idea of adding illustrations. She rewrote the text to publish it in other countries, including the United States. Lindgren also wrote "The Tomten and the Fox."

      Summary

      At night, the people at a farm in the country are asleep. Only Tomten, a gnome, is awake. No one has ever seen Tomten, but the people sense that he is there because sometimes the people find his small footprints in the snow. Tomten takes care of the animals and gives them comfort through a cold winter's night, and he promises them that spring will come again soon. Tomten also visits the children on the farm when they are sleeping.
