Perfect for costume parties, historical reenactments, or just standing out from the crowd, the hodag hat is your gateway to a legendary first impression.
This fearsome critter figured prominently in early Paul Bunyan stories and, according to legend, was captured alive by Rhinelander pioneer Eugene Shepard in 1896. The Hodag was described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end." The beast was put on display at the first Oneida County fair where thousands of spectators gathered (and paid) for a peek. As news spread, a group of scientists from the Smithsonian Institute expressed intent to inspect the creature. Unfortunately, this meant the end of a hoax for Shepard . . . or so they say.
This hat pays homage to that legendary spectacle—whether you're a fan of folklore, a history buff, or simply looking to add a unique twist to your wardrobe!
